Share Your Crypto & Web3 Projects: Join our open call for stories of crypto products improving people's lives. Through a rigorous selection process, our partner Crypto Council for Innovation (CCI) will transform selected submissions into case studies, modeled after our Income & Wealth Creation in Web3 report.
The Crypto Research and Design Lab (CRADL)’s vision is to put people at the center of crypto.
Tricia Wang and Sheila Warren founded CRADL in 2000, envisioning the value of evidence-based research as a driving force behind the crypto industry's journey toward a more equitable and inclusive society.
Our driving question: We are obsessed with better understanding how crypto can address seemingly intractable problems in the existing financial stack and around broader equity issues.
Making Impact: CRADL's research has been widely cited in congressional hearings and the media, leveraged by builders, and has been instrumental in driving meaningful conversations and actions within the crypto and Web3 communities.

A Hyperlocal, People-First Crypto Hackathon
In 2022, CoinDesk and CRADL partnered around a shared belief that the crypto industry must start building use cases for hyperlocal communities. Web3athon 2022 was a multi-blockchain, 2-stage, virtual hackathon that signaled a new culture of product development in crypto that emphasizes collaboration over competition. With 17 sponsors, over $800k in prizes, and over 6,000 registrants, Web3athon was the largest multi-chain hackathon as of 2022.
We are now partnered with Crypto Council for Innovation to produce new research and analysis on crypto and Web3 uses that tangibly serve people and communities.
With CCI as the premier global alliance advancing crypto innovation and CRADL as the leading ethnographic research institute helping organizations and policymakers understand why people are turning to crypto, the partnership signals an industry-wide commitment to elevating the social impact of crypto.
